Now, you can detect the subtle bites by keeping your hands on your rod. The leader will sink to the bottom, and the trout worm will float off the bottom, attracting trout nibbles. (Note: Some folks prefer Powerbait dough or Powerbait nuggets. Pop on it one of these 2-inch, pink, bubblegum trout worms from Gulp! and you are ready to cast.

To the swivel clip you attach your rig: a swivel plus 18 inches of 6-pound test plus a tiny hook (the hook below is smaller than a dime). In short, you slip on you line an egg sinker with a bead below it. In the few trips I’ve made there this winter, I’ve had great success with a lightweight rod with 6-pound test on it. That said, trout can be found all over the lake (after a stocking), and you can wander anywhere about Lake Cook’s perimeter and cast with ease. Conveniently, there are two fishing platforms that enable long casts to the lake’s center. Trout, loving cool dark waters, tend to hole up in the middle of the lake. The lake appears to get perhaps 15 foot deep.
I’ve hauled three young kids there without any trouble. All of which makes Cook Lake and easy-to-fish experience. There’s a small parking lot next to it, and Cameron Run -which is fishable- is across the street. It’s all of four acres, but is stocked in the winter with rainbow trout and has channel catfish. (You can check the Virginia government’s stocking schedule here.) Lake Cook ( directions here), also called Cook Lake, is little lake in Alexandria.
