The real-money aspects of the game aren't at the forefront, and it avoids the pay-to-win feel that some other free-to-play apps fall into. Though Subway Surfers is of course totally free, players that want to spend real-life currency can buy additional in-game cosmetics and power-ups. You'll also be able to unlock new characters like Tricky & Fresh, and there's an entire library of custom cosmetic content to select from. You'll gather coins as you run, which you can cash in on powerups like jetpacks or hoverboards that will get you farther and help dodge obstacles.Īnother unique style change is the ability to customize the power-ups as well, using unique skins like the Jive Outfit that can be unlocked during gameplay. This improved game-feel is aided by the game's slate of powerups. It's an ostensibly small difference but leads to a much better game-feel overall. The swipe-to-move mechanic is a welcome change from screen-tilting mechanics in competitors like Temple Run, giving you way more precision and control over your movements. The game also desperately wants you to connect to your Facebook account, and promises a free character (Dino) and coin rewards for doing so. You'll also earn coins for downloading some of the games you'll be seeing in Subway Surfers' many advertisements - titles like June's Journey, World War Rising, or Coin Dozer. If you're adamant about getting your in-game rewards without spending a cent, you'll have to keep a close watch on Daily Challenges and Weekly Hunts, which are ways of (albeit unpredictably) providing rewards for when you pull off specific moves. A character like Boombot can only be unlocked if you do break down and spend money on the game. Some characters aren't terribly expensive (like Lucy who is only 7,000), but others might take you a long while (Spike, Yutani, or Fresh all rely on luck of the draw through Token Boxes). In-game coins (which you can also spend anywhere between $1.00 and $100.00 of real money on) can be spent to unlock additional characters, outfits, or flashy skateboards.
Of course you can also gamble your coins on Token Boxes, another 'loot crate' system with randomized rewards. More keys means more revives, and for $9.99 you can net yourself a good 50 of them, enough to keep in the running for a while longer.
To its credit, you are never required to make a purchase, though it's strongly encouraged if you want to increase your chance of winning. Nothing is really free, and Subway Surfers is predictably laden with ads and micro-transactions. And here the game descends into the predictable micro-transactions. The more times you stumble in any one attempt, the more keys it'll take to revive yourself. There are ways to beg for a second chance, but you probably aren't going to like them it either means watching an ad, or spending Keys (one form of in-game currency) to pick up where you left off.
